2. Why is she your favorite?
Alex is very brave, tries to help people and is a good friend. But she's also very human. Alex is trying to figure out her life and she has to overcome some devastating developments to find happiness.
3. How did you come to create her?
I began "The Illusion of Certainty" concentrating on Marc and his story. The focal point was the disconnection he was feeling from his wife. I planned to bring another female character into the story in part three--one who would ultimately meet Marc. Then I decided to switch gears and switch to Alex's story. From then on the two stories ran parallel until Alex and Marc met. It was much more interesting that way because you had really gotten to know Alex over the course of the story. You really care about her. Readers and reviewers seem to really like the Alex character.
4. When did she first enter your mind?
I had a good friend who experienced what Alex did. She came out of her house one day and discovered that a neighbor had backed over a small child. My friend, who is a very mild mannered woman, sprang into action in the crisis and took care of the child until the EMTs arrived. I wasn't sure what Alex was going to be like. Her character was still evolving. I put Alex in that same circumstance and had her help the child who was in an accident. Her character just took off from there and I really got to like her.
5. Where was she given life in the creative process?
I wanted to have a woman who would take Marc into a whole new place in his life. She had been wounded deeply by the turns in her life. However, Alex was able to heal Marc and change his life. Alex was a strong character. She became just as important to the whole story as Marc was. I also liked the fact that Marc and Alex had crossed paths in Portland but didn't notice one another. Then when they are England, they suddenly notice one another. In fact, there is an immediate and strong connection.
6. What do you like the most about her and what do you dislike the most about her?
I don't think there's is much to dislike about Alex. She is grieving for her lost love through most of the book, but she remains positive and hopeful. There is a continual assault on her, including a literal attempted sexual assault. However, Alex is a survivor, yet very tender person. There is more to dislike about Marc's handling of his crisis then Alex. She handles her challenges in a very admirable way. I like that when she meets Marc, she is open to a new direction in her life.

But something is not right. Marc is unsettled by the sudden change in his wife, Aimee, who seems distant and unhappy. What is going on with her? The second storyline involves a successful young attorney Alexandra Mattson. Alex, as she is called by her friends, meets a handsome young cop, Sean, during an unexpected crisis in her neighborhood. Sean and Alex seem made for each other and begin to merge their futures in a world of uncertainty. The only certainty in life is uncertainty.
